Why short hair is the way to go

I’ve always been a natural afro kinda girl. I liked how I felt that I was channeling my inner Solange Knowles and that I was doing the world good by “being true to myself”. But I found out (after cutting my hair) that it doesn’t matter what my crown looks like but mainly how I feel on the inside.
We tend to get sentimental about hair and that may be because of our different upbringings. Short hair is hot right now and I’ll give you reasons why short is definitely the way to go this season:

1. Short hair has that sexy factor into it. You feel really empowered and it boosts your confidence levels. Since my haircut I’ve been feeling like superwoman who can conquer anything!

2. It’s exciting. Sometimes styling the same hair can be super-boring, which is why any time you cut your hair, you should be excited to step out of the chair with a fresh hairstyle knowing you look your best. So don’t be afraid to switch up your style — or at the very least, try color!

Short hair and color looks amazing. I know change is scary — and the anxiety you experience when thinking about it, let alone actually chopping off your hair, is very real. But it can also be exhilarating if you look at losing length through a more positive, rather than negative.

3. You might feel more comfortable in your new style. If you’re open and down for changing up your style, you might actually find that you feel more like yourself. Or maybe you will feel just as comfortable in short hair as you did with your longer hair.

4. Your hair will most likely look healthier after making a change. I’m not saying your hair looks bad now, but sometimes you can hold onto a style for so long that it ends up looking stringy and thinner at the ends.

With me, I decided to cut and change the look because it was unmanageable and looked untidy. I cut it so it’s easy to manage in the mornings and so i can take care of it better. Also, my hairline needed some TLC  ( Tender Loving Care) and cutting allowed my hair to start a fresh and grow.

5. You will learn how to style your new look, but you have to ask if you don’t already know how. Shorter hair is harder to style, I’ll give you that — especially since longer hair can be braided, thrown up into a ponytail or topknot, and tied in a low bun.

However, there’s a freedom that comes with not only being OK with losing your length but having less hair to deal with on a daily basis. You just have to make sure you have a good stylist. Or ask for aftercare tips at the salon after the styling.

Your hair doesn’t define you. You define you. Indie Arie “I am not my hair” is the perfect song to sing along while getting a fresh start with less hair and less morning drama!

Ladies, it’s your turn!
